I apologize for not having my review up for My Ex From Hell and for not doing the Upcoming part of this post. I haven't been able to get out of bed this week due to having the flu. I hope to get all of my posts up for this next week but right now I feel as though I'll collapse, so it'll have to be latter. I may only do some of my posts this week, depending on whether or not I feel better.

Struck (Struck, #1)

Synopsis:

Mia Price is a lightning addict. She’s survived countless strikes, but her craving to connect to the energy in storms endangers her life and the lives of those around her.

Los Angeles, where lightning rarely strikes, is one of the few places Mia feels safe from her addiction. But when an earthquake devastates the city, her haven is transformed into a minefield of chaos and danger. The beaches become massive tent cities. Downtown is a crumbling wasteland, where a traveling party moves to a different empty building each night, the revelers drawn to the destruction by a force they cannot deny. Two warring cults rise to power, and both see Mia as the key to their opposing doomsday prophecies. The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1)The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
didn't like it it was ok liked it really liked it (my current rating) it was amazing

Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Date Published: April 24th 2012
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal Dystopia

I've read so many vampire books in the past that normally I wouldn't even look at one. But this one is dystopian, which is more than a little different. And the author was Julie Kagawa, who I've heard amazing things about from my fellow book bloggers. So I decided to give this book a whirl.

Allie is a seventeen year old girl living in a world where vampires are the dominant species and humans are no more than animals used for food. She lives on the fringe, a place where unregistered human go to live poorly (but freely) and slowly starve to death. One day she goes outside of the city in search for food and gets turned into the very thing she hates--a vampire.

Allie flees the city and joins a group of people looking for a cure. A cure for the creatures called rabids who threaten both the humans and the vampires. They're crazy, deranged, bloodthirsty creatures without morals.

I had a lot of mixed feelings with this book. The first thing being that it was about vampires. I'm pretty sick of vampires, but I think Kagawa did a good job of making her vampires as unique as possible while keeping them very traditional. Kudos on that point. Not everyone does that when writing a book with a cliched element in it.

Another thing was that the romance element commonly in YA was scarce in this novel. I like my teen romance. Even if it seems so far-fetched and unbelievable, I still like having it there. But not too unbelievable. That just gets annoying. There was a little romance in this book, hopefully there will be more in the second one.

Everything else I loved about the story. My heart beat frantically at certain points during the book, and I loved the story and conflict Kagawa created. It was a good story. I kept reading, and I didn't want to put it down. Some books I want to put down but I keep going because I want to know what happens at the end. This was not one of those books. I liked the actual story, the journey that led to the end.

A fantastic read. I highly recommend it. One of the best vampire books I've read. I can't wait to read the next one!

To survive in a ruined world, she must embrace the darkness…

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a walled-in city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten. Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them—the vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself dies and becomes one of the monsters.

Forced to flee her city, Allie must pass for human as she joins a ragged group of pilgrims seeking a legend—a place that might have a cure for the disease that killed off most of civilization and created the rabids, the bloodthirsty creatures who threaten human and vampire alike. And soon Allie will have to decide what and who is worth dying for…again.

Enter Julie Kagawa's dark and twisted world as an unforgettable journey begins.

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1)Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
didn't like it it was ok liked it really liked it it was amazing (my current rating)

Publisher: HarperCollins
Date Published: January 3rd 2012
Genre: Young Adult Dystopian Romance

This book was not what I'm used to... but stunning all the same. The cover is gorgeous, and the character development is great. You can't change a character that much in one book and still have her be the same without some serious talent.

Under the Never Sky is the story of Aria, a girl who has lived inside the pods her whole life, and Perry, an Outsider and fierce hunter and warrior. Two people from two very different worlds who meet the one night everything changes.

Aria is thrown out when some other kids and her go to the surface of the pod, still inside but in a area forbidden. A raging fire is lit that kills three people, one of them being Aria's best friend. Perry is up to his own mischief, breaking into the damaged pod and gets there in the nick of time to save Aria.

Of course, only Aria and the Counsel's son survive. It's his word against hers. And so Aria is thrown out into a world she doesn't recognize and fears. Yet again, Perry reluctantly saves Aria. And that's where their journey begins, for both of them to find their way.

Okay, I loved this book. Perry was hot and Roar was awesome. I'm going to name my first born after him. Well, maybe not. Maybe their middle name or nickname can be Roar. Anyways, to say at the very least this book was a thrill ride.

Aria changed so much in this story. She developed from a scared little girl to someone fierce and strong; independent. And Perry loved in a soft, quiet sort of way. It was very subtle.

I've already explained how much I love Roar. He is amazing. The mental image I conjure up is hot, hot, HOTT! And his name, god his name is so... ahhhhhhhhh! I kind of wish it were Roar and Aria. But I do like Perry too, so I see why it's Perry not Roar. But Roar is just... *deep, lustful sigh*

Overall, book was superb. Couldn't have asked for a better story to keep me reading. Way to go Veronica Rossi!

Synopsis:

WORLDS KEPT THEM APART.

DESTINY BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER.

Aria has lived her whole life in the protected dome of Reverie. Her entire world confined to its spaces, she's never thought to dream of what lies beyond its doors. So when her mother goes missing, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland long enough to find her are slim.

Then Aria meets an outsider named Perry. He's searching for someone too. He's also wild - a savage - but might be her best hope at staying alive.

If they can survive, they are each other's best hope for finding answers.

Hey everyone! So I know I read this ages and ages ago, meaning about a year ago, but I re-read it for the Young Adult Book Bloggers Club. It was our book for this month, so I thought, what the heck, I loved this book. And I didn't have a review for this book anyway. So there you go.

Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Date Published: March 26th 2013
Genre: Young Adult Mystery

Whoa. Well that was different. A little disturbing, but in a good way I think. I don't doubt that this is a spectacular read, but I feel such painful empathy for the characters. Emily Murdoch, I think you did your job a little too well. I am beyond amazed with this book. I knew it would be different than what I was used to reading, but WOW. You shocked my socks off.

Carey is fifteen and her younger Jenessa sister is six. They've been living in the woods since their mother kidnapped Carey and latter on had Jenessa. Suddenly they're thrust into a world with warm beds and enough food to feed an army. They are clean and well fed and they have a roof over their heads. But it's so different, and their mother had abandoned them into this frightful world. But which was scarier, the dark woods or the bright lights of this other world? Carey uses music to help her get a hold of her emotions and escape for a little while when she plays. The past haunts Carey and her younger sister, making it difficult to trust their new family. What will happen if anyone finds out their secret?

Obviously, I loved this story. It was beautifully written and they story was amazing. I'm still trying to wrap my head around everything I've just read, as the characters didn't have the best start to life, as you can imagine. On one hand, it's very sad. They were deprived of so much. But on the other hand, they ended up getting a nice new home, even if they did have a rough start. Things slowly got better.

Summing it up, this is a great book and I really think you guys should read it. I'm going to be thinking about this book for weeks to come. I'll probably end up re-reading it. It's just... wow.

Mia HoddellAbout the Author
Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and her preferred genre is Young Adult, Paranormal Romance. Before 2009, Mia wouldn't even pick up a book and was more interested in sports. However she finally found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of both reading and writing. Mia began with poems and after getting two published in separate anthologies she moved onto short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series The Wanderer Trilogy and from there other ideas have emerged which she hopes to turn into novels as well. Elemental Killers is her second series and book two will be out soon.

Synopsis:

The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials--engineered organic beings identical to humans--has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.

Kira, a sixteen-year-old medic-in-training, is on the front lines of this battle, seeing RM ravage the community while mandatory pregnancy laws have pushed what's left of humanity to the brink of civil war, and she's not content to stand by and watch. But as she makes a desperate decision to save the last of her race, she will find that the survival of humans and Partials alike rests in her attempts to uncover the connections between them--connections that humanity has forgotten, or perhaps never even knew were there.

Dan Wells, acclaimed author of I Am Not a Serial Killer, takes readers on a pulsepounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question--one where our humanity is both our greatest liability and our only hope for survival.

I got this book for my birthday on Monday. My friend got it, so I'll be reading this... sometime in the future. I with I didn't have such a long list of books to read.

Alaskan Nights Cover Reveal

Alaskan Nights by Nadia Scrieva
Publication date: March 2013
Genre: New Adult Contemporary

Synopsis:

When Brynne left Alaska, she promised herself she would never go back.

The day after graduation, she got in her beat-up Honda Civic and drove down the west coast to pursue her dream of becoming a Hollywood makeup artist. Growing up in a rural fishing village with dirty, rundown buildings, and dirty, rundown men, she longed for the glitz and glamour of the silver screen. She had no qualms about leaving behind her dysfunctional family and her nowhere-job at her mother's fishing tackle shop. She didn't even think twice about leaving behind the cute boy who came in to buy gear almost every day, shamelessly flirting with her and always leaving a generous tip. Well, maybe she thought about it twice; but she knew that a relationship with Callder Murphy would only be bound to lead her deeper into nowhere. She was sick and tired of being nowhere—and no one.

Brynne set out, determined to prove to the world that she was much more than just a fisherman’s daughter. Unfortunately, her luck and tip money ran out in Seattle when her car broke down. Exhausted from the stress of travel, she decided to take a waitressing job in the city for the time being. “For the time being” ended up being far longer than she would have liked. That was four years ago. Now, a call from home has alerted Brynne to some bad news. She needs to get back to Soldotna promptly, but she has been living paycheck to paycheck and can’t even afford a plane ticket home. Enter a ghost from her past as her knight in shining armor. Unexpectedly showing up outside her restaurant in a red Ferrari, Callder is determined to take her home with him, and keep her there for good.

* * *

Perpetually drunken playboy, Callder Murphy, is currently loaded. Of course, that’s only because he stole his big brother’s credit card. He was off in Vegas, doing what he does best (absolutely nothing) when he received the call from home. A name he hasn’t heard in years pulls him out of his mindless haze of stumbling from one wild party to the next: Brynne Ambrose needs his help. Pleasant memories of the rude, tomboyish, and completely adorable girl-next-door come rushing back to him with a vengeance. He drops all of his shenanigans and cleans up his act instantaneously. He uses his brother’s credit card to buy an impressive car, and sets out to win over the girl of his dreams. He knows he’s no good for her, but he can’t stay away.

Callder has been waiting his whole life for the opportunity to be her man, and he’s not going to let her slip away again.

Precious Things by Stephanie Parent Cover Reveal

Precious Things
Release Date: May 2013
Cover Deisgned by: Allie Brennan of B Design
Cover reveal organized by: YA Bound

Summary from Goodreads:
Isabelle Andrews isn’t supposed to be here. She isn’t supposed to be a freshman at Hartford Community College, she isn't supposed to be living at home and working at her dad’s failing bakery, and she definitely isn’t supposed to be taking Intro to Electronic Music Production, a class that will get her nowhere toward her goal of an English Ph.D. by age twenty-five. But when her dad’s latest business fiasco eats up her college fund, Hartford Community College is exactly where Isabelle finds herself—and thanks to her late enrollment, she doesn’t even get to choose her classes. Stuck with Electronic Music and way-too-easy English courses, Isabelle is determined to wallow in all the misery she feels entitled to.

But community college brings some unexpected benefits…like the fact that a certain overworked, over-scheduled Electronic Music professor hands over most of his duties to his teaching assistant. His tall, green-eyed, absolutely gorgeous teaching assistant. When TA Evan Strauss discovers Isabelle’s apathy toward electronic music—and, well, all music—he makes it his mission to convert her. The music Evan composes stirs something inside Isabelle, but she can’t get involved—after all, she’ll be transferring out as soon as possible.

Still, no matter how tightly Isabelle holds on to her misery, she finds it slipping away in the wake of all Hartford Community offers: new friendships, a surprisingly cool poetry professor, and most of all, Evan. But Evan’s dream of owning his own music studio is as impractical as Isabelle’s dad’s bakery, and when Evan makes a terrible decision, everything Isabelle has gained threatens to unravel. Soon Isabelle discovers that some of the most important lessons take place outside the classroom…and that in life, as in Evan’s favorite Depeche Mode song, the most precious things can be the hardest to hold on to.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
didn't like it it was ok liked it really liked it (my current rating) it was amazing

Publisher: Flickimp Publishing
Date Published: January 27th 2013
Genre: Young Adult Dystopia

I love dystopia, and this was no exception. This book rocked. It was a real surprise, this book. All dystopia are different. But this one was really pretty cool.

Zachary lives in the Underworld with his dad. He's always looking through trash trying to find stuff he can sell so that he can eat. One day he finds a communication device that is a diary of a girl called Rose. He's completely enamored by her.

He gets to meet her once, but he wants to meet her again. The Overworld is ordering the Underworld to evacuate so that they can expand. And Rose's dad is in the heart of the matter.

I loved the story. While it may seem a little hard to relate to a dystopian character, the author did an excellent job of connecting the reader to the story. I was really pleased with how the story turned out.

I think this was a really great read, with common conflicts that we still face nowadays like prejudice and poverty. Things you can see everyday in our world if you know where to look.

View all my reviews

Synopsis:

Dirtying fingernails in sewers is fast approaching worthlessness for Zachary, a 16-year old Underworld scavenger. When footage of an Overworld girl, Rosa, is discovered, his intrigue heightens at why she expresses sadness with a lavish lifestyle.

In meeting Rosa, Zachary is scorned by her opinion of the deprived. She pities him and provides a means for them to communicate. With time, friendship and something he’s never felt grows; love for another human. Knowing Rosa calls him when it suits her isn’t enough; he wants to meet her, but how? Relationships in Underworld are few, let alone the impossibility with those above the ceiling.

Underworld will suffer when plans to conquer Jupiter’s moon, Europa move ahead. Worse is Rosa’s father, a disgraced Overworld ambassador, approving the plan.

Zachary must defeat the prejudice of the worlds, sneak within opposing forces, lose friends and challenge Rosa’s sadness. In doing so, a twisted secret is uncovered that may devour the reason he lives; Rosa.

In space, love had boundaries.
